General Motors has been voted as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere for the second year in a row.
Ethisphere is a for-profit agency that attempts to define and advance the standards of ethical business practices. Each year, it publishes a list of what it considers to be the World’s Most Ethical Companies based on its own Ethics Quotient framework, which assigns companies a score based on their performance in five key categories: ethics and compliance, corporate citizenship and responsibility, culture of ethics, governance and leadership and reputation.
General Motors is one of only four honorees in the automotive industry and, like last year, remains the only automotive original equipment manufacturer on the ist. The only other auto industry honorees named to the list for 2021 are self-driving vehicle company Aptiv, diesel engine supplier Cummins and equipment supplier Cooper Standard.
General Motors has only expanded its ethical business practices since being named to the 2020 World Most Ethical Companies list. The automaker was a major player in the United States’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing facemasks and other medical-grade PPE for distribution to hospitals and other medical centers. It also signed a contract with the federal government to provide life-saving Ventec ventilator machines for the national stockpile.
GM has also accelerated its commitment to electric vehicles over the past year, implementing a strategy that will see 40 percent of its product lineup consist of battery-powered cars, trucks and SUVs by 2025. It is also on track to be fully carbon neutral by 2040 and hopes to stop selling internal combustion engine passenger vehicles entirely by 2035.
“GM’s Code of Conduct sets forth our fundamental commitment to conduct business openly, ethically and honestly, even when it is difficult to do so,” said Michael Ortwein, GM’s assistant general counsel and chief compliance officer. “The World’s Most Ethical Company designation is external validation of GM’s core principles and yet another instance of GM leading by example on the path to transform the industry.”
