NEW DELHI: To help enthusiasts cycle safely and inspire more people to join them, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is going to develop a 2.7-kilometre cycle track around the boundary wall of Nehru Park. Lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the project, which will be completed in four months.
NDMC is also working on a dedicated 9-10km cycling track project, which will connect government housing colonies to offices in and around North Block, South Block, Nirman Bhavan, Central Secretariat and New Moti Bagh.
“Spread over 75 acres, Nehru Park in Chanakyapuri is surrounded by various foreign embassies, high commissions, and residences of diplomats and high-profile dignitaries, apart from state bhavans and quarters of central government employees. While the footfall at the park is already high, we are expecting a large number of people to use the 3-metre-wide cycling track around it,” said an official.
The park falls on the arterial Vinay Marg and Africa Avenue connecting New Delhi with south Delhi, and is adjacent to the Shanti Path-Rao Tularam stretch. “To reach the cycling track safely from all intersections or connecting roads such as Vinay Marg, Satya Marg, Niti Marg and Panchsheel Marg, we will develop cycle crossings as part of the project,” said the official.
After the project was conceived in October 2021, NDMC got a survey conducted by School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi. “As per the guidelines of Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC), a detailed proposal was prepared and sent for approval to the agencies concerned,” the official added.
Using latest techniques and materials, the track will have a 150mm-thick concrete layer, 6mm-thick micro surfacing and a 2mm cold plastic paint overlay. To make sure that the track has enough light in the evening, 200 lamp posts of 4mm height each will be installed.
In October 2020, NDMC launched a project, Cycle4Change, and developed a 5km stretch from Bikaner House at India Gate to Jor Bagh Metro station via Lodhi Garden. “The corridor, built on trial basis, was used by cyclists during weekends. However, it was not a dedicated track and not operational now,” said another official.
About the proposed dedicated track, an official said, “The plan has been prepared by SPA and approved by UTTIPEC. An estimate of Rs 11 crore has now been sent to the finance department for approval and the project will also be placed before NDMC’s apex council soon,” said the official.
