Kirby Smart has helped Georgia recruit at an elite level since his arrival. His last five classes have ranked No. 3, No. 1, No. 2, No. 1, and No. 4, respectively, in the 247Sports Team Class Rankings. The 2022 recruiting cycle brings another opportunity for the Dawgs to stack the roster with talent and 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong discussed whether they could once again reel in the top class in the country on the 247Sports Recruiting Podcast with Andrew Ivins.
"I think when you look already off the bat, you know they're sitting on eight commits, which is good for the number three-class nationally with an average ranking of over 95," Wiltfong said. "Ninety-five is like that, elite, elite company. So when you're over 95, you have a chance to finish number one. You look at LSU - they have the number two class nationally right now and it's really good, but it's at 92.16 for their average ranking per commit right now. This Georgia class has got a chance to be really special."
Two weeks ago Ivins and Wiltfong were able to watch one of Georgia's commitments, Bainbridge (Ga.) athlete Deyon Bouie, compete in the NFA 7-on-7 East Regional Myrtle Beach (S.C.). After missing his junior season due to recovery from a torn ACL and MCL, Bouie returned to the field and was one of the top performers in the secondary at the event.
"Bouie was a guy that I think you and I were very impressed with the way he moves," Wiltfong said. "We're not gonna find a defensive back with a skill set like that where he was playing, safety, playing corner press, off, you name it. He did it all well and is just a natural football player."
While the Dawgs already have a strong group in the fold, there are opportunities to strengthen the class but that will require Georgia to win some intense recruiting battles in the coming months.
"Georgia is in on a lot of blue-chip guys moving forward," Wiltfong said. "They are moving up the list for your guy Shemar Stewart. I think they are in the top three or four for him. Jeremiah Alexander - it's gonna be tough to pull him out of the state of Alabama, but Georgia is on his shortlist. Malaki Starks is a guy that I think could announce his college decision soon. The five-star from Jefferson Georgia. Georgia and Clemson in a good spot, Mykel Williams announcing soon. He's another top 50 recruit that appears to be trending towards Georgia.
"Georgia has got some battles man. These aren't givens that they're gonna get these guys, but Kirby Smart's had a top-three class in every cycle but this last one, which was still the top-five class. Look at the guys they are in on. Now you know that they're going to certainly get theirs. They're not going to go hungry, they're going to get a lot of these elite guys."
