On a night the Padres were treating hot and humid Nationals Park as if it were the mile-high air of Denver, Jake Cronenworth became the first player in team history to hit for the cycle somewhere other than Coors Field.
With a slow roller to shortstop that didn’t draw a throw in the sixth inning, Cronenworth completed the third cycle in franchise history Friday night in a game the Padres led 19-4 in the middle of the sixth.
Matt Kemp, on Aug. 14, 2015, and Wil Myers, on April 10, 2017, had the first two cycles by Padres players.
Cronenworth was robbed of a single in the first inning when Nationals shortstop Trea Turner made a running grab of a line drive in front of second base.
Cronenworth, who on Tuesday played in his first All-Star Game, doubled in the second inning when Nationals left fielder Josh Harrison slipped while running to field a line drive.
He lined a triple down the right field line in the third inning and homered on the first pitch of the fifth inning.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
