The Cycle: Frontier can be brutal for newer players. Gear is lost as easily as it's earned, and hostile alien creatures lurk in every cave, outpost, and innocuous-looking field - not to mention the ever-looming threat of another player with a devastating gun coming along and liking the look of the shiny things you've scavenged. Still, the free-to-play game offers a unique experience - gameplay can often feel reminiscent of immersive simulators, and hiding in the back of a decrepit outpost while waiting to steal the loot of a player under attack feels like a glimpse at what Fallout 76 should have been.
If players want to survive long enough to scavenge and escape from Fortuna III, they'll need to keep their equipment in good condition - this guide will take players through the process of purchasing, equipping, and repairing their armor.
What Does Armor Do?
It may seem obvious, but The Cycle: Frontier's armor system goes beyond just reducing damage - depending on the type of helmet and armor the player is wearing, the effects they experience may vary.
- Helmets/shields - Simply reduce damage to the player's body/head.
- Restoration helmets/shields - Slowly regenerate the player's health over time.
- Tactical helmets/shields - Increases the player's stamina.
- NV Helmets - Adds a toggle-able effect that makes it easier to see in dark areas.
It's worth noting that the rarer the shield/helmet, the greater its durability and secondary effects' effectiveness. Non-standard helmets and shields have slightly less durability than their regular counterparts, too.
- Common helmets/shields - 600 Durability
- Uncommon helmets/shields - 700 Durability
- Rare helmets/shields - 800 Durability
- Epic helmets/shields - 900 Durability
- Exotic & Legendary helmets/shields - 1,000 Durability
Where To Get Armor
With players presumably wanting to protect their vital organs, they'll need to purchase or 'print' some at the game's gear printer. Most new players will only have access to the lowest-tier armors at each faction's market, so players should visit the gear printer that can be found up the stairs to the right of the launch terminal.
Here, players will find a large list of items that they can craft - it can be filtered to just show armor via the 'filter' menu on the left side of the screen. Some higher rarity armors will require more currency or crafting materials than players currently have, but most of the uncommon shields and helmets can be crafted after just a few successful extractions.
Using Armor
Purchasing and/or crafting armor is all well and good, but if players want to bring it with them to Fortuna III, they'll need to make sure it's equipped properly.
To make sure it's properly equipped, players must open the inventory by pressing 'i', then right-click on the armor to equip it. There's an opportunity to double-check its equipped status and take out insurance on any gear before launching an expedition to the hostile planet, too, so players may wish to get insurance to protect their new armor.
Using the mouse to hover over the armor will also show its current level of durability.
Repairing Armor
Constantly buying new armor just isn't good for players' in-game wallets. Thankfully, The Cycle: Frontier offers an armor repair system that is far cheaper than constantly buying new helmets and shields.
Accessed via the gear printer, a well-hidden tab at the top of the screen can take players from the 'print' interface to the 'repair' interface. Here, players can see all the armor in their inventory that isn't in peak condition and spend a comparatively small amount of in-game currency on restoring it to its former glory. Damaged armor can also be filtered into just 'helmets' or 'shields' if players are only interested in one or the other.
The Cycle: Frontier is available on Microsoft Windows.
