Longhorn Baseball 2022 Preview
Tennessee third baseman Trey Lipscomb spent his first three years in Knoxville waiting behind All-Conference third basemen Andre Lipcius and Jake Rucker.
Transitioning into the starting role in his senior season, Lipscomb has big shoes too fill. Friday, he did something neither of his immediate predecessors did, hitting for the cycle in the Vols’ blowout win over Iona.
“It means a lot,” Lipscomb said. “I had no idea until I got to third and saw them toss the ball and was like ‘I really hit for the cycle.'”
Lipscomb homered in the first inning, doubled in the second inning, singled in the third inning, doubled in the fourth inning and tripled in the fifth inning to complete the cycle.
Lipscomb’s favorite hit?
“Probably the double that went five feet past the infield,” Lipscomb said.
The senior said he has hit for the cycle once before in high school, but that it took seven plate appearances to do for.
The Frederick, Maryland native drove in nine of Tennessee’s 27 runs despite playing just five innings. Lipscomb’s nine RBI performance was just one shy of the Vols’ program record.
Lipscomb becomes the fourth player in Tennessee history to hit for the cycle, joining Chris Burke, Jordan Rodgers and Matt Duffy.
The senior infielder’s historic game was a continuation of his fantastic start to the 2022 season. Lipscomb is now hitting .526 with three home runs, six extra-base hits, one walk and 15 RBIs.
“It’s his time,” Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello said of Lipscomb. “He’s done everything right and he’s waited forever. It’s his time.”
Tennessee is looking to earn the series win over the Gaels Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
