Nathan Aide Hits For Cycle as EIU beats Saint Xavier - Eastern Illinois University Athletics

RANTOUL, Ill. - Eastern Illinois (19-7, 3-0 OVC) defeat NAIA Saint Xavier (26-9, 9-1 CAA) by a score of 15-7 off of five doubles from EIU players including the first cycle hit since 2019 from Nathan Aide. Aide went 5-5 on the day including two doubles, a triple, a single, and a homerun. He also chipped in three RBIs. Lincoln Riley added three RBIs off of two hits and Lucas DiLuca added two more RBI. Starting pitcher mac Hickman picked up his first win of the season after he threw in 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and four strikeouts.

Hickman was able to shut down the Cougars offense in the first as he left them scoreless. Riley lead off the game for EIU with a double. After two outs, Aide was able to hit a deep double to score Riley to give the Panthers the first run of the game.

After a quick inning from Hickman, Grant Lashure homered to right center to score two after Rucker lead off the inning with a single. Sean Lynch also picked up a single in the inning.

The Cougars got on the board in the third off a homerun from Evan Orzech to cut the lead to 3-1. The Panthers offense stayed hot in the third starting with Aide who picked up his second double. Dalton Doyle replaced him at second with a double of his own to score one. After walks by Rucker and Lashure, Ja'Lil Akbar was walked to bring another run in. Riley then stepped up with his second double to clear the bases with two outs. DiLuca brought home the last run of the inning off a single to bring the score to 9-1.

EIU would add another run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly from Dalton Doyle after Aide lead off the inning with a triple.

Nick Laxner would enter the game for Hickman in the fifth. Saint Xavier would capitalize with a solo homerun from Patrick Hayes. Laxner would leave one stranded for the Cougars to get out of the inning. Panthers would go scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Laxner would bounce back in the sixth with a one, two, three inning for EIU's defense. Eickhoff lead off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and was followed with an RBI single from Aide. Rucker would come up with a huge double to bring home Aide from first. Panther would load the bases, but failed to score anymore giving them a 12-2 lead heading into the seventh.

Saint Xavier would start to battle back in the top of the seventh. Jalen Cardinal would replace Laxner on the mound. The Cougars would load the bases for an RBI single from Drew Hunnifo. Chaney Trout would then come in for EIU to pitch. After an two RBI fielder's choices from the Cougars, Trout would give up an RBI single to Joe Rycerz to cut the lead to 12-6.

Panthers would answer back in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back homeruns from Eickhoff and Aide. That homerun would give Aide the first cycle since Jimmy Govern in 2019, and put EIU up 14-6.

Cougars would score one more in the top of the eighth off of reliever Jesse Wainscott. DiLuca struck back with an RBI double of his own to score Bryce Hayman to give EIU the 15-7 win. Wainscott would end the ninth with no more damage.

 EIU scored 15 runs on on 18 hits and had one error. Saint Xavier would score seven runs on 13 hits and one error. The Panthers will be back this weekend for an OVC series against SIUE in Edwardsville. EIU will be the home team in the series. Livestats and radio will be made available.
