Kevin Harvick wins Brickyard 400 for third time - IndyStar

Kevin Harvick makes it back-to-back Brickyard 400 victories with Sunday's win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He also won at IMS in 2003.

Harvick took the lead when leader Denny Hamlin crashed with less than 10 laps to go. Harvick tied Hamlin with four victories this season.

Hamlin and Harvick had been the class of the field in the second half of the race. Harvick won Stage 2 and William Byron took Stage 1. 

Matt Kenseth, the 48-year-old who took over for the fired Kyle Larson, finished second, and Aric Almirola third. Brad Keselowski and Cole Custer rounded out the top five.

Austin Dillon and Matt DiBenedetto crashed at the finish line. They finished 18th and 19th, respectively.

Brickyard 400 play-by-play 

Race will go to overtime. Kevin Harvick leads, with Matt Kenseth, Aric Almirola and Cole Custer following.

Caution, Lap 153: Denny Hamlin hits the wall while leading. Another tire failure.

Hamlin won the Daytona 500 to start the season and has a series-leading four victories this year. 

Lap 150: Denny Hamlin still leads Kevin Harvick by about one-half second. Matt Kenseth is a close third.

Lap 145: Denny Hamlin leads Kevin Harvick by about one-half second. 

Restart, Lap 138: Denny Hamlin takes the lead and Kevin Harvick is second. These two drivers won last weekend's races at Pocono.

Caution, Lap 133: Alex Bowman his the wall.

Lap 130: Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch are running 1-2, but will need to pit for fuel.

Lap 123: Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott pit. Denny Hamlin takes the lead. 

Lap 122: Denny Hamlin pits under green while Kevin Harvick stays out.

Lap 115: Kevin Harvick leads Denny Hamlin by about .4 of a second. Chase Elliott is third.

Restart, Lap 106: The final stage is underway. Denny Hamlin makes a daring move inside, but Kevin Harvick comes back around the outside in Turn 3 to keep the lead. 

Stage 2 finishes at Lap 100: Kevin Harvick, the two-time and defending race champ, takes the stage by about 1 second over Chase Elliott. Denny Hamlin is third.

Restart, Lap 92: Kevin Harvick is clear of the field, with Case Elliott second and Denny Hamlin third.

Restart, Lap 88: Kevin Harvick gets by Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon on the inside for the lead. Ryan Blaney crashes, and it's another caution.

Restart, Lap 83: William Byron and Austin Dillon lead the field. William Bryon suffers a tire failure, and it's another caution.

Caution, Lap 75: Erik Jones hits the wall hard in Turn 3. He's OK.

Lap 72: Chase Elliott leads Denny Hamlin by 4+ seconds. Matt DeBenedetto, Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth follow.

Restart, Lap 56: Chase Elliott takes the lead, followed by Matt DiBenedetto and Denny Hamlin. 

Stage 1 is complete after 50 laps: William Byron wins it, followed by Erik Jones, Chase Elliott and Austin Dillon.

Restart, Lap 47: William Byron leads, followed by Erik Jones, Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon.

Caution, Lap 41: Ryan Newman, the Hoosier and 2013 Brickyard 400 champ, hits the wall. Significant right side damage. 

Lap 30: Kevin Harvick leads Joey Logano by 2+ seconds. Aric Almirola is third.

Restart, Lap 20: Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick, who had pitted early, battle for the lead. Harvick holds the lead at the end of the lap. Martin Truex Jr., Corey LaJoie, Ryan Preece, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Brennan Poole and Justin Allgaier are out. 

Caution: Cars return to the track. Kurt Busch, who had been running third, runs over a hose in the pits.

Red flag, Lap 16: Crash on pit road in the rear of the field. At least one member of Ryan Blaney's crew is struck, but he gives a thumbs up as he is taken off on a stretcher. Drivers involved: Martin Truex Jr., Blaney, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Ryan Preece, Ricky Stenhouse, Justin Allgaier, Brennan Poole.

NBC has noted that IMS' pit road is the narrowest in NASCAR. 

Competition caution at Lap 13: Kevin Harvick came in just before the caution in an attempt to get track position.

Justin Allgaier is driving for Jimmie Johnson, who has COVID-19.

Lap 11: Denny Hamlin passes Kurt Busch for second. Joey Logano keeps a 1-second lead.

Lap 1: Kurt Busch goes inside but pole-sitter Joey Logano keeps the lead out of Turn 2. 

Pre-race 

4:40 p.m.: The race is delayed but there's still a flyover. 

4:15 p.m.: Storms are lingering near the track. The race is delayed.

3:30 p.m.: Lighting was seen in the Speedway area. That could affect the start of the race.
