What is the two month cycle? Northland COVID cases rise as national numbers drop - WDIO

For the past 18 months, this pandemic has had a unique habit of following what medical professionals refer to as the two month cycle.

During this cycle, cases seem to rise exponentially for a period of two months and fall back down during the next stretch of 8 weeks.

This particular surge has been no exception but looking at Northland case rates, the area hasn't begun the descent yet.

As of Monday, state numbers show that Minnesota has 3,546 new cases with 73.5% of the population having had at least one shot.

In Wisconsin there are 2,900 hundred new cases with 56.9% percent of the population with at lease one dose of the vaccine.

Local health officials speculate that the rise in the area means the Northland is at a different part of the cycle than other portions of the country.

"We were a little late to the timing of the surge as compared to the southern part of the country or the east coast, so I think what we're seeing is just that natural sequence as it spreads," said Dr. Peter Henry, Chief Medical Officer at Essentia Health. "My hope is that we will eventually see the same downward trend in hospitalization rates, case rates and death rates that's been associated with the downward trend in other parts of the country."

And though the cause of these two month surges are still a mystery for the most part, Dr. Henry stressed that vaccinations have significantly reduced hospitalizations and extreme illness from variants like Delta.
