PARMA, Ohio -- General Motors (GM) last week announced plans to invest more than $46 million at its Parma Metal Center.

This is good news for Parma, which lists the stamping plant as the city’s largest employer.

“Parma is a proud GM town,” Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter said. “The stamping plant is our largest employer. The city only purchases GM products, whether it’s cars, trucks or vehicles. I personally drive a GMC myself.

“We have a lot of UAW 1005 workers who live in the city and a bunch of retirees. So this news is excellent for our community.”

Opened in 1948, the Parma plant has been a longtime leader in metal stamping capabilities. The Parma Metal Center, which employs approximately 1,000 UAW Local 1005 employees, processes daily more than 800 tons of steel supporting the majority of General Motors North America produced vehicles.

“The GM plant is iconic for Parma,” DeGeeter said. “In an unstable post-pandemic COVID-19 world, this is huge because we’re tethered to its workers, which means income revenue for our city allows services to our residents and businesses.”

The facility boasts more than 750 total dies and is capable of producing up to 100 million parts per year. The manufacturing processes include small, medium and large transfer press lines, high-speed progressive presses and a world-class cut-to-length shear, as well as GM North America’s largest stand-alone, multi-cell, resistance and laser-welding metal assembly operations.

Renovation work will begin immediately at the Parma Metal Center. The GM investment will be used for equipment upgrades and to prepare the facility to support future product programs.

“Our Parma operation is a longtime leader in metal stamping capabilities and this investment reflects our confidence in the employees at Parma,” said Phil Kienle, GM vice president of North America Manufacturing and Labor Relations.

“This investment will help the Parma team continue producing high quality, sheet metal stampings for a variety of future GM products.”
