For a second year, the Redlands Conservancy will hold its Fresh Air Challenge, an event challenging Redlands residents to walk, run, cycle or horseback ride a total of a million miles during the month of January.

The Conservancy created the event, co-sponsored by the city of Redlands, at the end of 2020 as a pandemic-safe way to raise funds to help maintain the city’s open space and trails and to fund the Conservancy’s outdoor education program, according to a news release.

During the challenge, registered participants record the miles they cover in January by any means of non-motorized travel.

In the January 2021 challenge, there were more than 300 participants, and they recorded 27,000 miles, according to a news release.

“We didn’t quite make a million miles, but it’s possible, if every one of the 70,000 Redlands residentstraveled a mere 15 miles throughout the month,” Kathy Behrens, organizer of the Fresh Air Challenge, said in the news release.

Registration is $40 for adults and includes an event T-shirt. There is no registration fee for children and students. Children’s T-shirts are available for $12.

To register, go to redlandsconservancy.org/challenge-2022/.

The 2022 Fresh Air Challenge will kick off with an opening event 9 a.m. Jan. 2 at Ed Hales Park, at State and Fifth streets in downtown Redlands. Those who have not already registered may do so then, and those who registered by Dec. 10 can pick up their T-shirts at the opening event. Those who register after that will receive their T-shirts at the end of January.

The opening event will include food and entertainment.

A new feature of the 2022 challenge is a School Challenge, with public and private schools in Redlands invited to form teams of students or staff or both. The miles recorded by students and staff members, and their families, will count for the school’s team, and the school with the most miles at the end of January will win the challenge — and an ice cream party, according to the news release.

Also new is the recording system, with participants able to record their miles directly from devices such as Fitbits or through Strava or other tracking software.
