Six members of a Jersey City gang have been charged with stabbing a rival gang member more than a year ago in retaliation for a similar assault in 2018, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.
Sheldon Mays, aka “Thottie,” 21, Jermaine Jennings, aka “Maine” and “Drill,” 20, Divine Abraham, aka “Dee,” 21, Jamil Bowens, 20, Jaylen Boone, 21, and Yahsier Brown, 19, all of Jersey City — members of the “Tay Tay Shrimp Gang” based in the Curries Woods housing complex — were charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering activity in the Aug. 3, 2020 incident.
All six, who face up to 20 years in prison, have made their first appearances and are being detained through prosecution. The investigation was conducted as part of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), which was formed in 2018 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department.
The detailed criminal complaint provide new insight on gang activity in Jersey City, including three gangs forming an alliance to act against the Curries Woods gang, which has historically consisted of members and associates of the 52 Hoover set of the Crips street gang.
Authorities say Mays, Jennings, Abraham, Bowens, Boone and Brown were retaliating for a prior assault of Mays on April 11, 2018 by members of the Wilkinson Avenue (Wilkinson) and Ocean Avenue (Ocean Getting Money, or OGM) gangs which had aligned “to retaliate against rival gangs that they share in common.”
More recently, in an effort to gain strength and power against its rivals, Wilkinson/OGM — which consists of members and associates of the Grape Street Crips or the Sex, Money, Murder set of the Bloods — has further aligned with SaLaf, another set of the Grape Street Crips that operates in the area of the Salem-Lafayette public housing complex.
A 2020 criminal complaint noted that the Curries Woods gang has also forged alliances with the Rutgers Avenue gang and “300,” a subset of the Marion Gardens housing complex gang.
A series of violent, retaliatory exchanges between Curries Woods and Wilkinson/OGM that began in 2015 continued on June 19, 2020, when Abraham, one of the men charged, was shot in the chest while sitting in a vehicle at a gas station on Wilkinson Avenue. He survived the shooting and two members of the SaLaf gang were charged federally.
Just 24 hours later, three people walked into the Salem-Lafayette Apartments and opened fire into the crowd, injuring four and killing a high-ranking member of the SaLaf gang, the criminal complaint said. Approximately two hours later, two people were injured when shots were fired on a group in the Curries Woods housing complex.
In the Aug. 3, 2020 incident, Mays, Jennings, Bowens, Boone, Abraham, Brown and two unnamed men, all members of he Curries Woods gang, arrived at Martin Luther King Drive and Dwight Street, authorities said.
They spotted the victim, a member of Wilkinson/OGM, walking northbound on MLK Drive and surrounded the victim. The victim ran north on MLK Drive, but he was caught and repeated punched and kicked by the group, authorities said. Mays stabbed the victim in his side as the assault continued, said authorities, who noted in the complaint that the incident was captured by Jersey City police CCTV cameras.
A person who was with the victim tried to intercede to help the victim, but that person was also assaulted. The assailants fled and the victim was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement reviewed lawfully recorded conversations and text messages in which Mays, Boone and Brown admitted they and other members of the Curries Woods Enterprise assaulted the victim.
