This summer is going to be a watershed one for Tottenham Hotspur, especially in the area of recruitment and transfers. But while Spurs desperately need to bring new players in (once they appoint a new manager) a number of players will also be heading for the exit door. One of the players linked away this summer, as he has for the past few years, is Serge Aurier, and there have been questions as to whether Spurs should consider moving him on.
Aurier, however, has apparently made the decision for Tottenham. In an article in Sunday’s L’Equipe, Aurier made it explicitly clear that he is ready to move on from Tottenham, with a return to PSG his preferred destination. The L’Equipe article is behind a paywall, but thankfully we have football.london to provide the quotes.
“Everyone is aware that if I wanted to extend my deal at Tottenham, I would’ve done so already. I’m not going to do it in six months. I’ve reached the end of a cycle and it’s time to look elsewhere. The two parties, Tottenham’s board and my agents, have agreed upon the conditions. We’ll see after that.
“I’ve never hidden my desire to return to PSG one day. It’s the club of my heart, the one that I support and I feel free to speak about it. But I don’t want people to think that I’m stuck on them and I’m not closing the door on anyone. But if the club were to make an offer this summer, it’s sure that PSG would be my first choice.”
Aurier’s had a pretty decent season, but he’s the very definition of inconsistent. While at his best he can be virtually unplayable, he has just as many mistakes in his locker that cause fans to pull their hair out watching him play. And considering he came to Tottenham with considerable baggage, it’s clear that a lot of fans, myself included, have never really warmed to him, even after four years.
Tottenham’s right back position has been something of a revolving door since Kyle Walker first broke into the side, and Serge’s departure would continue that cycle. However, Tottenham also deserve to have players that are both consistent in their play and also want to be here. Aurier has not met that standard in the former sense and clearly would like to move on. It’s time we let him.
