Shohei Ohtani almost added another incredible achievement to his resume on Sunday, as he finished a single short of hitting for the cycle. I know, imagine needing only a single to complete the cycle! Too bad. The Angels will take it, as they picked up the 6-4 victory over the Rays.
The Halos’ offense came alive late, as they scored a run in their final four innings. In the top of the sixth, Ohtani hit a double to drive in a run and give the Angels the 2-1 lead. In typical Angels fashion though, the bullpen proceeded to allow three runs in the bottom half of the inning, putting the Rays on top, 4-2.
The offense bounced back though, as they tied things up in the seventh. Juan Lagares doubled in a run to cut their deficit to one run. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Ohtani stepped up again. He delivered yet another clutch hit, this time hitting a triple to bring in the tying run. For Ohtani, it’s already his fourth triple of the season.
Phil Gosselin led off the eighth inning with a solo homer, putting the Angels ahead by one run.
The next inning, Ohtani hit a solo home run to left-center field for his 25th home run of the season. From the sixth inning on, he hit a double, triple and a home run. Seriously, what can’t he do?! Oh, for good measure, he also stole a base earlier in the game.
Patrick Sandoval was decent in his start, giving the Angels five innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and finished with six strikeouts Sandoval continues to be the most consistent and reliable arm for the Angels in their rotation (aside from Ohtani). Every start he goes out there and gives the Angels at least five innings and limits the damage.
Props to the bullpen for keeping things in check after the Rays’ sixth-inning barrage. Mike Mayers, Tony Watson and Raisel Iglesias combined to throw four innings of relief. They allowed a combined two hits and allowed only one run to score. They had five combined strikeouts as well.
Up next
The Angels will leave Tampa Bay and head to New York to take on the Yankees. They’ll play a four-game series there before heading back home.
