Excitement and momentum continue to build for Cycle 66, a bicycle tour and festival planned for Nov. 7 in Edmond.

“Edmond is excited to welcome bicyclists of all levels to our inaugural Cycle 66 ride. Whether you are a Route 66 history buff, want a healthy family outing, training for some hills or challenging friends to the 66-miler, this ride has something for everyone,” Jennifer Seaton, director of Visit Edmond, said.

The event expects to welcome 300 riders who can choose one of three routes – 10, 33, or 66 miles – that each start and finish in downtown Edmond and include segments of historic Route 66. Through Labor Day, the tour cost is $35 regardless of distance; the fee increases by $10 after Sept. 6.

The 10-mile route is recommended for families and recreational riders, and explores downtown Edmond, the University of Central Oklahoma campus, parks and bike paths.

For intermediate riders, the 33-mile route starts in Edmond, then dips south to the state Capitol. The route will include OU Health’s “Party at the Turn” before heading back to downtown Edmond.

The 66-mile route is for advanced riders and bikers. With significant mileage on Route 66, the course includes the five communities of Edmond, Oklahoma City, Jones, Luther and Arcadia.

A free finish line celebration at Festival Marketplace in downtown Edmond will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 7. Celebration 66 will include a DJ, food trucks, vendors and a bounce house for children.

“We are thrilled to see another opportunity to celebrate Route 66, boost tourism in Edmond and increase awareness of our fantastic amenities like biking and walking trails,” said Sherry Jordan, president and CEO of the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are also looking forward to seeing the impact these tours have on our local restaurants and retailers. When people experience an event like Cycle 66 as a community, it can truly bring us together and change people’s lives.”

OU Health is title sponsor for the Cycle 66 inaugural event. Event partners include the city of Edmond, the state of Oklahoma, Visit Edmond and all Route 66 stakeholders.

A portion of event proceeds will benefit Autumn Life Behavioral Health Center, a dedicated geriatric psychiatry inpatient program at OU Health Edmond Medical Center that addresses the unique needs of mature adults ages 55 and up. Other proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and preserving Route 66 statewide.

“We are really excited about the Edmond Cycle 66 event and what it means not just for Edmond, but the greater Route 66 community,” said Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association. “Cycling interest on the historic highway has been growing steadily – seeing the road over handlebars is much different than seeing it through a windshield!”

Oklahoma is home to the longest drivable stretch of Route 66, nearly 400 miles. Known as the Mother Road, it was established on Nov. 11, 1926.
