GREEN BAY, Wis (NBC 26) -- Boats, tackle, even motors are all part of the upcoming summer fishing season. But right now, it can be hard to get your hands on any of them.
At Smokey's on the Bay, a tackle and bait shop in Green Bay, management is trying to keep up with anglers' needs. But fishermen are starting to get apprehensive about stuff they need disappearing.
"If you can find something that you want to buy, buy it. Because the insight we get from Smokeys here is that the next time we get something in is possibly June," says Bernie Erickson who also works at the tackle shop.
Inventory is already more limited than usual at Smokeys. Some anglers add they are starting to notice big box stores running out of the essentials as well.
"The only reels they have are in a display case, and they don't sell them. A good reel or a good rod is hard to find," adds Tom Patzke of the Green Bay Area Great Lakes Sport Fishermen club.
Patzke says even quality fishing line is starting to get scarce. And we haven't even mentioned the most important fishing tool yet that anglers are concerned about, motors.
"Everything is hard to find right now. I have a neighbor that has an engine that quit and he's running around, and he can hardly find an engine to buy," adds Erickson.
We took the fishermens' major concern to the experts at Pamp's Outboard in Green Bay. They have been selling boats for over 60 years and the last two have been the best on record.
"Today, all of these boats are sold except for three of them," says Jen Monger of Pamp's Outboard.
Monger says they typically have 30 boats for sale on the floor at the shop, but they just can't keep up this year. Today she says a newly ordered boat, would likely arrive mid-summer. As far as motors go, Monger says they are also getting purchased at a crazy rate.
"Anything up to 40 horsepower we're being told is 30 weeks out. So I'm going to say this summer if you want to re-power with a Mercury 40 or under, it's probably not going to happen."
