COVID vaccine could effect menstrual cycle - NBC2 News

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Sore arms, fever and exhaustion; these are some of the side effects we’re used to hearing about for people who’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19.

There’s another issue some women are reporting: a change in their menstrual cycle.

“There’s no conclusive evidence right now because there really hasn’t been that much research,” nurse practitioner Susan Hook said.

“Because women are just now starting to report after their vaccine that they had some menstrual irregularities.”

On the NBC2 facebook page, we asked Southwest Florida women what they’ve experienced.

Half said they’ve had irregular, heavier or even missed periods since getting the vaccine.

Hook says no need to worry as these are normal responses to any vaccine.

“Your body is reacting to something foreign, whether it be a physically foreign thing like a vaccine or an illness or foreign stressors like worry and anxiety, depression, those kinds of things,” Hook explained.

She said periods can be thrown off by many factors and it’s likely just temporary and not something that should discourage anyone from getting vaccinated.

“It’s not like it’s five months’ worth of irregular periods,” Hook said.

“It’s like an isolated incident.”

Some are more worried about the potential effects.

“I hope that this doesn’t end up being something that affects every woman,” Rachel Savage said.

“I hope it is a not-so-commonly seen side effect.”

There’s no way to prevent these symptoms before you get the shot. Doctors advise you should monitor them and see a professional if they last more than a month.
