The Richards Group has named former General Motors human resources and labor management director Nikki Wilson its first chief talent and culture officer.

The move is part of the company’s effort to transform its internal culture after racially insensitive comments from its eponymous founder lost the agency a number of high-profile clients last year.

Founder and CEO Stan Richards stepped down from the advertising agency in October, elevating Glenn Dady to CEO. Wilson will report to Dady. Her duties will include overseeing leadership training, integration of new initiatives and leading human resources functions.

Wilson will join the company’s newly formed leadership council, where she will help guide the ad agency’s future. The leadership council will be joined by another newly formed committee made up of a rotating roster of more junior employees to provide the agency fresh perspective, according to The Richards Group.

“I’m excited to join The Richards Group at such an important time in their refounding journey,” Wilson said in a statement. “As the agency continues to deliver great creative content, we also want to deliver a great employee experience.”

Dady said Wilson’s hire “may be our most important position we’ve created since the founding of the agency,” adding that she is the “perfect person for the role.”

Wilson worked at GM for 18 years and most recently oversaw human resources strategy, leadership development and workforce training at the company’s massive Arlington assembly plant, which makes full-size Chevrolet and GMC SUVs and Cadillac Escalades.

In the time since Richards’ departure from the firm, the independent ad agency has worked to openly adopt inclusive management practices.

The ad agency had already announced that it was partnering with the diversity and inclusion consultants Do What Matters to “refound” the firm.

The Richards Group laid off around 15% of its staff of 700 in November and December after departing clients such as San Antonio-based H-E-B, Home Depot and Carrollton-based Motel 6 left a hole in the firm’s revenue. The client exodus occurred within days of Richards’ racially insensitive remarks being publicized.

Richards reportedly described a new Motel 6 ad pitch as being “too Black” for the hotel chain’s “white supremacist constituents.”
