The ‘Cats got their bats going as the game progressed, picking up a 8-2 win and improved their record to 37-33.

Parker Kelly made his first start for Tri-City since July 20, returning from a stint on the injured list. He went five innings and allowed two runs – one in the first inning and one in the second. He allowed six hits, two walks and struck out one, earning the win.

“He threw 66 pitches in five innings and pitched out of some tough spots,” said Valleycats manager Pete Incaviglia. “I thought he threw the ball very well, for being out for three weeks. It’s a good sign and we’ll see how he feels tomorrow and hopefully get in for another start.”

He handed the ball off to Jake Dexter, who would eat the final four innings of the game, allowing just two hits, without allowing a run. Dexter would earn his first save of the season, due to pitching three-plus innings to end a game.

“It was a big game for Dex, we were a little low in the bullpen from the first game,” Incaviglia said. “I’m glad to see him pitch well and he alleviated a lot of those guys in the bullpen and we’ll have everybody ready to go on Tuesday and that’s because Dex went out there and threw four innings.”

In the bottom of the first, Brad Zunica got his first triple of the year, it was a RBI triple that tied the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the third, Willy Garcia hit a two-run home run to give the Valleycats a 3-2 lead.

They’d add three more in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Carson McCusker and a two-run double from Connor Lien, going up 6-2.

Zunica went 4-for-5 in the game, nearly hitting for the cycle. In the bottom of the seventh, he was thrown out at second base going for a double and may have been safe had he slid. In the bottom of the eighth, he hit a two-run home run, giving him a triple, two singles and a homer – and the Valleycats an 8-2 lead.

“Who knows, maybe if I get the double then I don’t get the home run, so there’s two ways to look at it,” Zunica said. “It would have been cool, but it is what it is.”

Zunica’s batting average is now at .400 (54-for-135) this season for the Valleycats, with nine home runs and 27 RBI, with three RBI on Sunday.

Juan Silverio and Luis Roman each had three hits on the day, all singles. Garcia had two hits, a homer and a single.

After an off day on Monday, the Valleycats will remain at home for a three game series against the New York Boulders. Tri-City now has a 2.5 game lead in the Atlantic Division.

Max Herrmann, the Sussex County pitcher who was ejected during the second game of Saturday’s double-header for the use of a foreign substance, was suspended six games by the Frontier League. In Major League Baseball, the suspension for such an infraction is 10 games, however the Frontier League plays a significantly shorter season.

During the hot dog race, the Valleycats poked fun at the situation. Relish, who has not won a race all season, won the race but was disqualified by team mascot Southpaw, who found a hat on Relish with a foreign substance.
